Looking Ahead to Daytona
«
on:
June 24, 2010, 05:58:01 AM »
How many teams will show up for Daytona next week and how many of the underfunded teams won't?I've heard that some of the teams still don't have COT's for next week and that some of those that do have cars, only have one car so they can't afford to really practice or mix it up during the race or they won't have a car to go to Michigan in August. I understand that NASCAR wants to put the safest car possible out there, but the COT in the Nationwide Series could be the end for some of the teams that are barely haning on now. I think it will mean more Cup associated operations and an end to the independent.

Well, there are some teams I didn't expect to have a COT the first race or this season period and they do. Rensi/Eric McClure has one but Eric said they won't run with the pack. JDM is building atleast 1 that I know of and I believe Kenny Wallace said JRR built one. I also read Danny Efland built one and we know Carl Long has his deal.
I doubt Day Enterprises has one. I haven't read anything about K-Automotive building one or Key Motorsports but I'm sure they both have atleast one. RWR doesn't have one and I doubt Jimmy Means or Specialty have one
All in all, I believe we'll have a full field. Over half of them will he protecting cars though and I have a feeling it may be a boring race to watch.

I think you could probably add the D'hondt cars to that list of who dont have COT and I say about 40 cars will show up.

The #05 will more than likely be here, considering that Cash America and David Starr are teaming up with them for the event. Phoenix racing allegedly will return with Newman, and it was reported very early in the season that Ricky Carmichael and Turner Motorsports would attempt all of the COT races, but not sure of the current status of that plan. Various sources show that Cope, Shepherd, and Lepage will all be here in some capacity, and Schacht and Gerhart have claimed to be building a COT for this event.
Right now the teams that have a questionable status to me are the #27/#43, #26/#96, #61, #49, and #42.

Morgan does have one, Keselowski's winning car from Talladega last year, they just converted it. The 42 does as well.

Pretty generous as you can tell. K-Automotive is working hard on getting their COT prepped, but something in me doubts they'll have two ready, and I just don't see Specialty making an attempt.

I know K has at least 1 since they bought an old Evernham car and were converting it...I doubt the 75 has one,so i doubt we'll see Gerhardt
The way Braun has been racing,Roush would be an IDIOT(oops i used the word idiot) to but Ickler in the car..
Hoping Danny Efland has a good run in that 07!

"Bobby Gerhart, who qualified ninth at Pocono in his first ARCA race attempt since winning the season-opener at Daytona, told Frontstretch that his team is attempting to prepare a Nationwide Series COT car in time for the NNS race at Daytona in July. He's also looking to dip into the Truck Series, searching for a ride at the Pocono event later that month"

Yeah, I forgot about Gerhart. I'm pretty sure they have one ready. Also, I believe when Carl Long's new team said they were gonna run they already had a car put together.
I'm sure the 09 has one, someone already said the 42 does. So that leaves the 92, 61, and 49.

I would say no to the 92....I don't know if K can prepare two cars,at this time...Brian will have one,but I don't think the 92 will be there..
I think JRR bought a couple,so the 49 might be there....
61 would be my only question....

I think the list might be about 10 cars too generous.

I know for sure that k auto doesn't have any cars ready but is working on something for Daytona. The 61 is not going and the 73,56,04,75,43,and 42 are either no shows or gonna be really tight on making it.
Expect two to three backups to be unloaded as nascar has asked a few teams to bring extra cars.
