No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet News and Notes

Weekend Rewind: Charlotte I - After coming off of a season-best finish at Iowa Speedway, Justin Allgaier and the No. 31 BRANDT team were hoping to continue their momentum with another solid finish. Even though the team battled temperatures in the 90s and a temperamental handling race car, Allgaier took the checkered flag in the eighth spot for his second top-10 finish in as many weeks. The finish was also enough to move Allgaier up one spot in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) point standings to sixth, 94 points behind the leader.

Allgaier at Dover International Speedway - Allgaier will make his seventh series start this weekend at the “Monster Mile”. In six previous attempts, he has notched three top-10 finishes, with an average start of 16.8 and average finish of 16.5. His track-best finish is a ninth-place effort which came back in 2010. In his last trip to Dover, Allgaier scored a 10th-place finish.

Hitting the Links to Support Autism Awareness - Before hitting the track on Friday morning, Allgaier will join Turner Motorsports crew chief Trent Owens at the 11th annual Drive for Autism Celebrity-Am Golf Outing at DuPont Country Club. Outfitted with a new set of Nike golf clubs, Allgaier is thrilled at the opportunity to support and raise awareness for a cause like Autism Awareness.

Playing in the Dirt - On Memorial Day, Allgaier headed home once more to Illinois to race his dirt modified car alongside fellow drivers Kenny Wallace and Kenny Schrader for NASCAR Night 1 at Macon Speedway in Macon, Illinois. Allgaier is no stranger to the track having won his first ever feature event at Macon Speedway at the ripe old age of 12. After winning his heat race, Allgaier started the main fifth and finished sixth.

This Week’s Impala - This weekend, Allgaier will pilot TMS-322 in the 5-hour Energy 200 at Dover International Speedway. This chassis last saw action at Darlington Raceway three weeks ago where Allgaier finished 13th after starting 10th.

Allgaier on returning to the ‘Monster Mile’:

“I’ve always kind of viewed Dover as a short track on steroids. It’s almost a bigger, faster Bristol, as the speeds we carry into the corners are so much greater. I’ve really been encouraged by our finishes over the last few weeks and I think our breakout performance is just around the corner. I’m hopeful we can make it happen this weekend. It would be awesome to hold up one of those cool trophies in victory lane with my team and the folks from BRANDT. I’m thrilled too to have the chance to join Trent [Owens, No. 30 crew chief] at the Drive for Autism Celebrity-Am event on Thursday before we get to the track. Autism is something that hits pretty close to home for Trent and I’m excited to help out in raising awareness and funds for this great cause.”

Brad Sweet Career NNS Stats

4            0                 0                    0                    1               12.2                   20.8

Back in the saddle… Brad Sweet will return to the seat of the No. 38 Great Clips machine this weekend for the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Dover International Speedway (DIS). Sweet will compete in the next five events on the NNS schedule before Kasey Kahne rejoins the team at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Previous experience at DIS… Sweet has made just one career start at DIS. Last year, he competed in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at the track nicknamed “The Monster Mile,” starting 18th and finishing 30th after being collected in a mid-race accident.

Who’s on the pit box? Mike Shiplett joined Turner Motorsports in 2012 and has a unique role as he calls the shots for both a veteran (Kasey Kahne) and a rookie (Sweet). It is a reunion of sorts for Kahne and Shiplett, who were paired together in the NNS during the 2007 season and put down impressive results including two victories (Charlotte Motor Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway, spring events).

This Week’s Impala… The No. 38 team will unload chassis TMS-319 this weekend at Iowa Speedway. This chassis last saw track time at Richmond and Phoenix where Kahne finished 18th and 10th, respectively.

Testing, Testing 123… Sweet and the No. 38 Great Clips team spent this Tuesday testing at Virginia International Raceway. The rookie is scheduled to compete in two of the three road course races this season including those at Road America and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Kasey Kahne Racing (KKR) gives Great Clips third win of the year… Last week in the World of Outlaws race at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Joey Saldana drove the No. 9 Great Clips car to victory lane. This was the third feature win of the season for Saldana and Great Clips.

Kahne and Sweet: a unique combination… Not only are Kahne and Sweet good friends off the track, but the veteran is serving as mentor to Sweet as he makes the transition from open-wheel competition to stock cars. Sweet was handpicked by Kahne in 2008 to drive for Kasey Kahne Racing (KKR) where he has since experienced tremendous success in the World of Outlaws Series. Sweet will continue to compete on a limited basis for KKR when he is not behind the wheel of the No. 38 Great Clips machine in the NNS. You can expect Kahne to be very involved and present in the NNS garage when Sweet is behind the wheel of the No. 38 as he will closely monitor his progress and offer encouragement.

Kahne brought Great Clips their first win! From 2003-2005, Kahne and his sponsor, Great Clips, Inc., reached momentous milestones, including capturing Kahne’s first Nationwide Series victory in 2003 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It was also Great Clips’ first win as a primary sponsor. In 2005, Kahne captured his second career win at Texas Motor Speedway before leaving the Nationwide Series to allow more time for his Sprint Cup Series efforts.

Great Clips goes racing with the World of Outlaws in 2012! Great Clips serves as sponsor for KKR driver Joey Saldana this year in the World of Outlaws series. The Minneapolis-based company has been a sponsor of KKR for the past two seasons. This year, they will be featured on all three KKR entries – as a primary sponsor on the #9 with Saldana as well as associate sponsor placement on Brad Sweet’s #49 and Cody Darrah’s #5 World of Outlaws cars.

12 Years and Counting… Great Clips, Inc. is currently the longest-running sponsor in the NNS and has used the Nationwide Series as their primary marketing platform for the last 11 years. Their sponsorship began in 2000 with Akins Motorsports as they climbed on board to sponsor the team’s No. 38 entry with driver, Christian Elder. Mark Green piloted the No. 38 for one season before general manager, Doug Stringer, hired up-and-coming talent, Kasey Kahne, thereby solidifying Great Clips’ commitment to their NASCAR sponsorship.

Sweet on this weekend’s NNS race at Dover

I’m excited about getting back behind the wheel this weekend at Dover. It’s an awesome race track but it’s also a tough one! It’s a place where you have to stay focused and stay on your toes every lap. I’m happy that I get to drive this Great Clips car for the next five weeks. It’s going to allow me to get in a good rhythm with these guys and get some momentum going. In my three races so far, we have had some really strong runs so I look forward to continuing that trend starting this weekend at Dover.

Double Duty… The Texas-native will need his running shoes this weekend at Dover International Speedway.  Not only will he pilot the No. 30 AccuDoc Solutions Chevrolet in Saturday’s 200-mile NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) event, but Buescher will also tend to his full-time duties driving the No. 31 Koike Aaronson Chevrolet Silverado on Friday afternoon.

Nice Stats… Buescher has had a very strong start to the 2012 NNS.  The 22-year-old has captured one win [Daytona International Speedway], one top-five and four top-10 finishes, despite missing two events.  He has an average finish of 9.8, which ranks him fifth, right behind championship contender Austin Dillon.  The No. 30 car sits seventh in NNS owner points, only 65 markers out of the lead.

James Buescher on driving at Dover International Speedway

“Dover is going to be a very busy weekend.  Running two races really takes a lot of preparation, both mentally and physically.  I spend a lot of time during the week preparing physically.  I typically spend at least an hour and a half each day in the gym doing both strength and cardio training.  Living in Texas helps me prepare for the heat while in the car.  In the summer, it averages over 100 degrees here, so I am used to the heat.  As far as being mentally prepared, I try to focus on each race and tune out outside distractions.  When I am in the racecar, I am 100 percent focused on getting the most out of my car.  Turner Motorsports is doing a great job bringing strong cars to the track each and every week and I am so lucky to be a part of it all.”
