RED BULL RACING TEAM DAYTONA DRIVERS: Scott Speed (No. 82) / Reed Sorenson (No. 83) EVENT: Daytona 400 (Sprint Cup) DATES: Thursday-Saturday, July 1-3, 2010 TRACK: Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, Fla. + AS THEY SAY, WE’RE HALFWAY Seems like yesterday that we were at Daytona International Speedway. Actually, it was five months ago. 82 . SCOTT SPEED NO MAGIC AT THE MILE: Speed finished 27th on Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. His No. 82 Red Bull Toyota was stout during the first 10 laps of each run, but the handling fell off after that — and that was the theme throughout a relatively uneventful Lenox Industrial Tools 301. The finish was Speed’s best in three starts at New Hampshire. PLATE RACE ALERT: Driver No. 82 is quite the restrictor-plate racer. He led 12 laps and finished 19th in the season-opening Daytona 500, and owns two top-15 finishes at Daytona’s sister track in Talladega, Ala. BACK WHERE THE SEASON BEGAN: “I like Daytona a lot. We ran well there last time. It should be good. It marks the halfway point. It’s nice to be home on a Sunday and finishing under the lights is pretty cool — not meaning the weather.” VITAL SIGNS: Ranks 26th in the driver standings. He’s 12 points behind 25th-place Brad Keselowski. FIRST TIME IN THE TOP FIVE: The first top-five finish of Speed’s career came at a restrictor-plate race. In April 2009, Speed finished fifth at Talladega Superspeedway — only 13 races into his Sprint Cup career. 83 . REED SORENSON NO MAGIC AT THE MILE II: In his first race in the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota, Sorenson finished 24th on Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He, too, fought handling issues as the laps went way during each long run. HE LOVES DRAFTING: Sorenson goes from one of his favorite tracks to another. He owns two top 10s in eight Sprint Cup starts at Daytona, with a best finish of fifth in February 2008. ME & BV: “As far as driving style, I think everybody has a little different driving style. But, as far as what we want out of the car compared to a lot of other drivers that have been around, I think it’s pretty close. And I knew that as soon as I went to the first three races this year on the Nationwide side.” — Sorenson on his driving style compared to Brian Vickers, who’s a teammate of Sorenson’s in Braun Racing’s Nationwide car. VITAL SIGNS: The No. 83 ranks 24th in the car owner standings — 170 points out of 20th. TWO DAYS, TWO RACES: Sorenson will drive Braun Racing’s No. 32 Toyota on Friday night at Daytona. He’s finished in the top 10 in half of his sixth Nationwide starts there, with a best finish of seventh in July 2007. + WHITT’S ON THE ‘ROAD’ TO RECOVERY For the first time in his career, Cole Whitt enters the realm of road racing. Sure, he’s driven tiny shifter karts before on tracks that turn left and right, but Saturday’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Lime Rock Park will be his first in a big, bulky stock car. #wmMessage again,” joked driver No. 84. “Yeah, it’s going to be tough. Road racing in a stock car is something new that I have no idea how to do. But I’m up for the challenge.” Whitt’s coming off a 26th-place finish Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He never had the chance to contend after a rear gear pinion problem sent him behind the wall not long after the green flag. After that, the No. 84 Red Bull Toyota team treated the New England 125 as a test session for when the series returns to New Hampshire in September. With only five races remaining in the season, Whitt ranks eighth in the championship standings — 151 points behind leader Ryan Truex. “We are all about go, go go. No holds barred,” Whitt said. “There’s nothing for us to lose. We can fall back (in points), but to me there’s no difference between second and last. We’re going to go as hard as we can and try to win all of these races.” + SPRINT CUP DRIVER STATS (TRACK) 82 . Speed Category 83 .
