Danica Patrick will make her NASCAR debut at Daytona International Speedway according to media reports which cited anonymous sources close to the situation.
Patrick made her stock car debut at DIS in Saturday’s ARCA race, a series unaffiliated with NASCAR. She finished sixth and said after the race she had yet to make her decision about this week’s Nationwide race.
The Indy Racing League star is expected to make an official announcement on Monday. JR Motorsports officials would not comment but confirmed there would be an announcement today.
After her top-10 ARCA finish, Patrick said she was still undecided about whether or not to begin her NASCAR career on the high banks.
“I have a lot to learn, so we’ll have to decide by Monday,” Patrick said. “… I learned what it feels like. I learned what it feels like to hit people.”
Of concern for Patrick was the fact that her driving the car would mean teammate Kelly Bires, whom the team plans to run most of the season, wouldn’t get to race at Daytona. JR Motorsports, owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kelley Earnhardt, Rick Hendrick and Tony Eury Jr., will field two cars for the race, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. will drive one of them.
Of concern to her team owners was the number of top-tier drivers who participate in the season-opening Nationwide race.
“It’s basically a Cup race,” said Kelley Earnhardt.
Patrick’s impressive performance in her stock-car debut on Saturday might has embodened her
She qualified 12th and ran near the front of the field for most of the race, thus escaping several crashes.
