Get to Know More about Herd Racing

Herd Racing was founded in 2008 and is named after the Thundering Herd mascot of Marshall University, located in Huntington, WV. Herd Racing’s owner Dana Tomes, and driver Brett Rowe, both attended Marshall University, and remain West Virginia residents.

Herd Racing’s race cars bear the number 75 which is printed in the color black on the cars. The number is in memory of the 75 people who died in a plane crash in November 1970 when a chartered jet carrying the Marshall University football team crashed during landing in Huntington, West Virginia.

The race team’s colors are the same as those of the university, green and white,

and the team’s hauler displays a large wreath memorial decal in memory of those killed

in the tragic 1970 crash.

The crash was made well known as the events were recounted in the 2007 movie

“We are Marshall” starring Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox.

The team maintains its office and race shops in West Virginia, less than 20 miles

from the university and the site of the plane crash.

STREAMLINE HOTEL WAS BIRTHPLACE OF NASCAR RACING

The Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach will serve as the host of Herd Racing’s

crew during the team’s stay in Florida, but most NASCAR fans aren’t aware of the historical

facts surrounding the hotel and the sport of racing.

A fixture in Daytona since the 1940s, Bill France Sr. and others sat in the lounge at

the Streamline Hotel in the late 1940s and drew up the original agreement which later

formed the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, NASCAR.

The hotel has been known ever since as the “birthplace of NASCAR.”

WIGGINS FAMILY RECIPE WORKING TO CREATE NAME IN DAYTONA

Wiggins Family Recipe of Ridgeville, Indiana, will be catering to the culinary

needs of the Herd Racing crew during the Daytona race weekend.

No, the company won’t be flying in meals from the mid-west, but preparing

them in their new location right here in Daytona.

The company’s namesake, Isaiah Wiggins, took over management of the

Streamline Hotel in Daytona in 2008 and is establishing his Wiggins Family Recipe line

of fine foods as a guest staple at the historic hotel.

HERD RACING HAS GONE TO THE DOGS

Herd Racing’s #75 Dodge Charger will carry the logo and contact information

for the Halifax Humane Society on its rear TV panel during Daytona events February

10-13.

The placement on the car was provided by Charleston, S.C. resident Barbara

Matzelle who said she wanted to do something to help promote the shelter and the good

things it does with animals in the Daytona area.

Mrs. Matzelle purchased the sponsorship on the car for the Halifax Humane Society

in memory of a previous pet, and Herd Racing has invited the shelter’s management

to the race as guests of the team where they can meet driver Brett Rowe and get

their photos made with their logo on the car.

Fans can learn more about the Halifax Humane Society at their website,

www.halifaxhumanesociety.org.
